SUNDAY BREAKFAST/ MOM'S RECIPE/INVISIBLE!

My mom's old recipe for huevos con tomate: four eggs, roasted chiles and tomatoes, shallots and garlic(drop the tomatoes in boiling water for ten seconds in order to get rid of the peel), parsley, cilantro, salt and pepper to taste...HMMMMMMM!!! Delicious!. Add to that a salad of grape fruit, strawberries and bananas, with just a little hint of jasmine honey and rose water, some cafe con leche, and you are in for a great treat and a wonderful beginning of a lazy Sunday morning! After breakfast, back to the studio and some more editing on "INVISIBLE", my new CD to be out this December.

BACK IN THE STUDIO 2
BACK IN THE STUDIO

After spending a couple of weeks in Costa Rica, having fun with old friends and family, I am back in the studio, doing the very last sessions needed to finish my new CD. Here, my friend and fellow band member, master percussionist Brad Dutz, lays some marimba and hand percussion tracks, while I do an alto flute track on "Tango y Sangre de la media Noche".

BACK FROM COSTA RICA

I am back from Costa Rica. I had a wonderful time with friends and family. On my flight back I had the pleasure of hanging with the members of the Club Sport Herediano Costa Rican soccer team, many of them part of the National Team. Here I am with Andy Herron, (ex Chicago Fire, ex Columbus Crew), center forward for the Costa Rican team that beat the US last week 3 to 1.

Having a great time...A brake from the business aspect of the trip. An incredible performance by Costa Rica. I had the pleasure of being at the stadium with my friend Agustin.( I am the one wearing a red shirt... :) ). Celebration with a delicious steak at "El Chicote" and a few cold "Imperiales" afterwards. Also working on a Central American tour for next spring. Back in the US on Tuesday.

APOCALYPTIC!!!

That's what my son Adam called it as we started to get engulfed in a dark red cloud of smoke and ash during the incredible fire that has been attacking our community for the last 72 hours. After packing our cars with a few things of value (my music, my cat, my computer, a few paintings and old photos) we headed out to our friend's Paco and Jeannette Rodriguez's house (thanks guys!) where we spent a few nights away from the flames. But life goes on and tonight I will be in the studio working again on my new CD...

OLDER BUT WISER...I THINK!!!!!!!!
Tired, after an intense but wonderful session at "Sound Design" Studios in Santa Barbara, CA, with Dom Camardella, studio owner and old friend, and great organ player Jimmy Calire. Recording "Tango"

My friend George Quirin at yesterday's session, doing the guitar track for "Tango y Sangre de la Media Noche". Tomorrow I will be at Sound Design Recording Studios in Santa Barbara, working with my old partner in crime, Dominic Camardella. We'll be recording some Hammond organ tracks with Jimmy Calire ( a great Buffalo, NY musician who used to play with the group "America". His son drums for Ozomatli). I am already more than half way done with the new recording, and very happy with the results so far. L.

BETWEEN RECORDING SESSIONS 2!
Taking a break from recording (next week i have lots of sessions), trying to clear the mind and after cooking a big Moroccan meal ( butternut squash and lentil soup, fennel and black olive salad with lemon vinaigrette, caramelised onions with chargrilled eggplants, spicy prawns, basmati rice, figs with rosewater, almonds and honey, and of course, moroccan mint tea, we went to an orchid show in search of the "Guaria Morada", the Costa Rican National Flower. Hundreds of flowers later, we walked out empty handed but joyful !

Agustin Fallas, my dear friend from childhood and my manager for issues in Latin America came and visit me to plan some concerts down south and at the same time, have some fun together in CA. Good conversations, good meals and a few great Jazz concerts (David Binney at the Pasadena Jazz Institute)...Here are a couple of pictures taken during our drive up north to Happy Canyon in the Santa Inez mountains. Not a bad spot at all to talk business!

HAVING FUN @ STAPLES CENTER

Having fun last night at Staples Center in Los Angeles, watching "the other" L.A. NBA team. Unfortunately the Clippers lost their 15th in a row, but it was lots of fun anyway, hanging with the family and taking a break from the studio. THe new CD is coming out great. This month, Lois Mahalia will be doing two more tunes, then I'll bring in Jonathan Dane (trumpet) and Jim Calire, a wonderful Hammond player to do a B3 track. I am very, very satisfied with the results so far. L.

FIRST RECORDING SESSION AT BEAGLE STUDIOS FOR NEW CD
I was very glad to be back this weekend to Beagle Studio for the first session for a new CD to be released next year. Located in Montecito, CA, Beagle Studios is a beautiful place surrounded by fields of green and forests of pine trees and oaks. Singer Andy Zuñiga and studio owner Emmet Sargeant were also there. This coming week, beautiful and talented singer Lois Mahalia, along with guitarist Chris Judge and bass player Tom Etchart will cut some tracks including the lead vocals for a Gospel spiritual "Hymn"
HYMN
Blessed are the ones who surrender to Love
For they’ll inherit the Kingdom of Heaven
Few are the ones who will rise from despair
Many the ones who are bowed down and fallen (but)
Hope is a waking dream, it’s a sunrise
Hope…from a withered tree, flowers blossom.
Open your heart to the world and rejoice (and)
Live as if you’ll die tomorrow
Learn as if you’ll live forever and
Hope as if hope were the beat of your heart.
In the twilight each star is a dream
Blessed are the dreamers on top of the mountain
Wise are the ones who seek treasures within
For they will find and drink from the fountain
Hope is a waking dream, it’s a sunrise
Hope…from a withered tree, flowers blossom.
Open your heart to the world and rejoice and
Live as if you’ll die tomorrow
Learn as if you’ll live forever and
Hope as if hope were the beat of your heart.
----------------
Hope is a waking dream, it’s a sunrise
Hope…from a withered tree, flowers blossom.
Open your heart to the world and rejoice (and)
Live as if you’ll die tomorrow
Learn as if you’ll live forever and
Hope, step away from the shadow
Love with no fear and no sorrow

MUSIC AND POLITICS

It’s been over a month since I last posted on my blog. I’ve been very busy. Two things have been taking all my time lately. Number one, I started recording a new CD. So far, I’ve been working in my home studio, doing most of the work myself. However, bassist Tom Etchart, guitarist Narciso Sotomayor, keyboardist George Friedenthal and singer Teka have also stopped by to do some tracks for me. So far, I have 9 new compositions among them: Malabarista (The Juggler), Manantial, Sendero Luminoso and Tango y Sangre de la Media Noche. The recording won’t be released for another year, but it sure feels great to get started with it.
The other thing that has been keeping me busy is politics. I am proud to say that I’ve been spending lots of time trying to help Mr. Barack Obama become the next president of the United States. I’ve also been involved with the upcoming local elections, helping Louise Capps, Pedro Nava, Anna Beth Jackson and the rest of the Democratic candidates. I’ve met some wonderful people on the way. It’s been a very interesting endeavor, making phone calls all over the country, talking to people, sharing ideas, and listening to their fears, hopes and interests. A wonderful learning experience and a satisfying one. I hope to be celebrating Mr. Obama’s victory this coming Tuesday.

FACING THE POLITICAL PROCESS

In less than two months, we will be facing the most important presidential election of our lifetime, an act that will influence the entire universe and in many ways will choose the path of modern civilization. It is an unprecedented opportunity for all of us to get involved in record numbers, cast a vote and be a part of such a process...

FIRST RECORDING SESSION

Last sunday I had the first recording session for a new CD, to be released some time next year. I had the opportunity to work again with my dear friend and wonderful Brazilian singer Teka Pentiriche. She recorded both lead and background vocals on a new bilingual tune (Spanish and Portuguese) entitled "Manantial". Click here to see the lyrics:

A MASTERPIECE! MILTON AND WAYNE!

I just finished listening for the first time in many years,to a masterpiece, "Native Dancer", the incredible collaboration between two masters of contemporary music: Brazilian singer/songwriter Milton Nascimento and probably the best Jazz composer/saxophonist alive today, Wayne Shorter, both performing at their very best. After more than 30 years the music sounds as fresh as if it had been recorded yesterday. Sonically, conceptually and compositionally, it does not get any better than this. Herbie Hancock, Airto, David Amaro and Wagner Tizo also participate. One of my "25 Best Recordings " of all time.

"EL FLAUTISTA"/RECUERDOS.
I took this picture in late 1969, in the Avenida Central, San José, Costa Rica. This gentleman is one of the many characters I used to spend time with in the city. He was full of great stories and very inspirational. Two years later, I ended up studying flute at the Music Conservatory of the National University. The Conservatory at the time was located in a beautiful old building on the south corner of the "Morazán" Park, downtown. Oh my, how things change! These days, that building is home to "Key Largo", one of the more popular whore houses in San José, but that is another story...

ABEJONES/A SHORT STORY

JAZZTIMES MAGAZINE REVIEWS "OF SOUL AND SHADOW"

"Of Soul and Shadow" continues gathering great reviews from the international press. This time,Forrest Dylan Bryant of JazzTimes Magazine (March 2008 issue) writes: "Costa Rican keyboardist-percussionist Muñoz has painted a kaleidoscopic portrait of his homeland, combining several strains of Jazz performance into a folkloric framework. A large, rotating cast of musicians evoke lush rainforest, busy urban centers, relaxed country life or scenes of nostalgic romance with ease... Tunes like the dance machine "La Verdad", or the too-short "Luz del Sur" areterrific...Read more

"LATIN JAZZ NETWORK" INTERVIEWS LUIS MUNOZ

"Of Soul and Shadow" is a beautiful, passionate recording in which the fusion of the most diverse musical elements is more evident than in previous releases. Luis continues to grow in talent and maturity. His music has a distinctive sensibility rooted in ancient Pan-American rhythms, but enriched with modern, contemporary expressions.

ANOTHER GREAT REVIEW! LA JAZZ SCENE 11/07
LUIS MUNOZ/OF SOUL AND SHADOW (Pelín Music)
Based in Santa Barbara, composer and multi-instrumentalist Luis Muñoz combines the best of heart-rending Latin Jazz with the soul of Central America. He grew up in Costa Rica, attended the University of Costa Rica and the nation's National Music Conservatory; then moved to the U.S. in 1974. At UC Santa Barbara, he earned his degree in Music Composition and has written prolifically since then. His latest album explores the idioms of Costa Rican folklore, classical music and Jazz through 10 originals that swing hard or simmer gracefully: sometimes both.
Saxophonists David Binney and Tom Buckner give Muñoz the exciting sound that he wants, as his ensembles get into a groove. When trombonist Ira Nepus steps into the spotlight on "La Semilla", the heat is on. He is complemented by high note trumpeter Adolfo Acosta, as a wide array of percussion keeps the motion flowing strong. This one brings out the goose bumps! Then, Muñoz contrasts his program with Ron Kalina's soulful harmonica on "Al Silencio", which mourns confortingly to nurse the evening's woes away. The composer's drum set ties the unit together seamlessly, as blues turns into a hopeful dawn with all its positive magic.
Elsewhere, the composer brings us impressions of the tradition that has built Central America for hundreds of years. Vocals by Andy Zúñiga and more harmonica, saxophone and trumpet spotlights give the session personality. On flute, Muñoz carries a deep, heartfelt charm; on piano, he delivers with sensitivity. This recommended album rocks hard while highlighting the cultural background that makes Latin Jazz the emotional tool that has captured our heart and soul.

Ejazznews reviews "Of Soul and Shadow"

CD Reviews: CD Review/Luis Munoz/Of Soul & ShadOw/PEL2007
Posted by: editoron Saturday, September 22, 2007 - 09:01 AM
I've been lucky enough to review several of latino piano specialist Luis Munoz's CD projects over the years. This current project shows Luis's bent on creating latin jazz that is both absorbing & engaging for his listenership. Luis's music is always alive & fresh & this spate of originals is a prime example of both his delicate quality with stylistic precision. Munoz's music offers us a thoughtful combination of interesting musical ideas & a satisfying aesthetic as well. Luis's compositional talents are extraordinarily wide with a sensitivity & phraseology that can quiet one's sensibilites. Kudos then to this wonderful latino pianist-composer of song as he delivers his songs to discriminating & accepting ears..........OURS, in an apparent, effortless fashion.
